FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- For months the biggest question facing the Patriots was whether Tom Brady would be on the field for the start of the 2016 regular season. While that question has been answered, its not the only issue to resolve for New Englands offense as it prepares for its third preseason game.Running back Dion Lewis has yet to appear in a training camp practice or preseason game. He had ACL surgery on his left knee in November and now reportedly could be facing a second procedure. There are also health concerns on the offensive line. Sebastian Vollmer was expected to be the starter at right tackle, but has missed both preseason games and remains on the physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed issue. In addition, guard Shaq Mason, who was not in uniform last week against Chicago after starting the preseason opener, reportedly has a broken hand. Lewis, Vollmer and Mason were all absent from the practice field on Monday.Brady was also absent after not being on the sideline for his second straight preseason game. Coach Bill Belichick declined to give details, saying only I dont comment on any personal situations. What Belichick has acknowledged is that because of Bradys upcoming four-game Deflategate suspension, the priority is to get Jimmy Garoppolo ready to play. The Patriots were hoping to see Lewis, who had four touchdowns in seven games before his injury last year, ready in time for the regular season after getting him back on the field in June during their offseason program.Losing Mason would also be a setback after he appeared in 14 games with 10 starts in 2015. The same can be said for Vollmer, a fixture on New Englands line since arriving in 2009.The way that we practice and the way that we play, whoevers out there were ready to go, said veteran left tackle Nate Solder, who played in just four games last season before going on season-ending injured reserve.Asked in particular what the team loses without Vollmer, Solder said there were so many things. As a group we just have to move forward, he said. The most likely candidate to step into Vollmers spot at right tackle is Marcus Cannon. Cannon filled Solders left tackle role when he went down last season, and he has started the first two preseason games at right tackle. If they want you to play, that must mean they have trust for you to play in that position -- wherever they put me, Cannon said.Belichick said he thinks Cannon has had a good camp so far and is capable of playing on either side of the line. There were other circumstances and because of his athleticism, his intelligence, his versatility, a lot of times he was the guy making the move, Belichick said. But I think weve got him in a good spot now.How the Patriots proceed at running back is a little more complicated, because whoever replaces Lewis will be needed in the passing game.LeGarrette Blount has played well this preseason, but is more of a traditional ball carrier. The same is true for a player such as Brandon Bolden.James White, in his third season out of Wisconsin, has shown ability catching the ball out of the backfield, but has had trouble at times getting in the end zone in the run game.Im always gonna be myself, White said. Your role can change on the team each and every year. So whatever my role happens to be, Im gonna go out there and do it to the best of my ability and just try and help this team win.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Kyle Hightower on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/khightowerSchweiz Trikot 2018 . Woodson said during a radio interview Thursday that the Knicks Carmelo Anthony doesnt get the same calls as other superstars.Only a mere 7.2 miles, 20 minutes along the M-30, separates the Santiago Bernabeu and Vicente Calderon stadiums, but in terms of football philosophies and preparation, Real Madrid and Atletico are a million miles apart. Ahead of Saturdays Champions League final between the Madrid rivals, Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has run through what we can expect in Milan. So just what are the major differences between the two finalists? The managersBoth Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane were great players and cult heroes at their respective clubs. That, however, is where the similarity ends. In just about every other way, they are polar opposites. To merely describe Simeone as hands-on is to seriously underestimate his level of involvement. What we have here is a man totally obsessed with football, who transmits his heart, soul and very being into every single aspect of this Atletico side.A man who, in his head, kicks every ball, takes every throw, hits every free-kick, saves every shot and scores every goal. A man who lives, breathes and feels the pleasure and the pain of every one of his players, and a man who believes to the very depths of his red-and-white-striped soul that to do it any other way would be nothing short of a dereliction of duty. Diego Simeone has reached his second Champions League final in three years Zidane, as we have all seen and Marco Materrazi has personally felt, is not above the occasional overt display of football passion, although it has to be said that from a coaching point of view, his approach occasionally seems laid back to the point of being almost horizontal. What we have here, in complete contrast to his predecessor Rafa Benitez, is a man who has more or less let his team develop on its own and discover its own identity. That said, he has taken on board a few of the decisions that Benitez put in place, namely the inclusion of Casemiro, the gradual sidelining of Isco and James Rodriguez, and the increased prominence to the attack of Gareth Bale. And to date, despite my early misgivings, this particular style of management seems to sit very well with this Real Madrid side.As the saying has it, what cant speak, cant lie. Since taking over in January, in addition to taking Real Madrid to just one match from their 11th European Cup, he also saw his side take the title race against Barcelona right to the wire, winning 21 and losing just two out the 26 league games in charge. Simeone and Zinedine Zidane were cult heroes during their playing careers He must be doing something right, yet deep down I cant help but feel that the real problem with Real is that at one point or another during every game, they are showing vulnerability. The only exception to that was, perhaps, the Manchester City semi-final, although that may have had more to do with Citys weakness rather than Reals strength. These are weak areas that can normally be corrected in training with hard work and application, but the feeling I get is that he doesnt really bother too much with it, concentrating more on keeping the side fit and, above all, content.Simeones Atletico could not be more different. Like a predatory animal sensing blood, they harass and encircle their quarry, looking to exploit any of their opponents shortcomings. They will work to that end relentlessly in training and if there is the slightest indication of any frailty during the game, the merest suggestion of an Achilles heel, then Atletico will go for the jugular. That is exactly what I think will happen in this final. The physicalityCompared to the team that reached the final against Real two years ago in Lisbon, just about every single Atletico Madrid player has played less minutes this time around. In addition, every single player, including those on the bench, feel they have a part to play, not least the re-born Fernando Torres, who has gone from being a third striker to automatic starter. Sergio Ramos last-minute header in 2014 took the final to extra time Two years ago, Sergio Ramos last-gasp equaliser was a dagger to the heart of a spent, broken, over-used, battered and bruised Atletico side that realised at that one moment that they could make no more trips to the well.I am not convinced that this time around it will happen again. The problem, of course, is that this is a side that demands an awful lot from its players in terms of fighting for every ball and, having won it, demands the initiation of many long, lung-bursting runs, because they tend to drop too deep as a side. Mixing high pressure with low pressure is incredibly tiring, but should be a necessity, and the fact Atletico are the team that goes into the final in much better physical shape this time round should help. If there is the slightest indication of any frailty during the game, the merest suggestion of an Achilles heel, then Atletico will go for the jugular. Guillem Balague Real Madrid, on the other hand, do not have the same depth, simply because Zidane has made the clear distinction between what he considers to be his first choice, and then the others. As a result, players like James and Isco feel less important than they did a year ago, and bearing in mind that I cant recall the last time when either of them had any real impact on a game, I see no reason why this final should be any different. One player that certainly has made an impact and could make a difference, if fully recovered from his injury, is Lucas Vazquez, who has played every match since his inclusion as if it was his first. Isco (right) and James Rodriguez (left) have had to get used to the bench The two defencesJust about everyone plays his part defensiively for Atletico.dddddddddddd. Torres desire to do his bit for the cause cost him a red card in the quarter-final first leg against Barcelona but did at least demonstrate the commitment required from everyone from one to 11.More and more teams are now playing this way, but not Real Madrid, who if faced with a team that can dominate possession, will move further and further back. Their front three may put in the occasional short shift at the coalface, but it isnt always frequent enough, and against a team that attacks and defends as one, it is almost impossible to hold out for 90 minutes. In central defence, there is little to choose between the two sides, although in the area of full-back, Dani Carvajal and Marcelo are not, in my opinion, as good defensively as Juanfran and Filipe Luis are.In goal, there is little to choose between Jan Oblak and Keylor Navas, although Oblak has had fewer shots to deal with this season. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet, strong on crosses, good on one-on-one situations and unquestionably the best goalkeeper in La Liga this season. Jan Oblak has been in fine form at Atletico this term I believe, above all, he is also a better example of what is expected these days from a modern goalkeeper, although it must also be said that Navas is certainly no slouch. The psychological battleIt is in this department where Real Madrid will have certain advantages. Fans, players and directors alike will tell you that this is the sort of game the club has always been destined to play in.They have been in this position before, and feel very much at home here. Rightly or wrongly, they see the Champions League as their tournament, and will probably not be slow to remind anyone that against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002, their current manager also happened to score what many regard as the greatest goal ever to grace this magnificent football event. They also know that Ramos 93rd-minute header two years ago is still very much the elephant in the Atletico Madrid room.I spoke to Koke a few months after the final and he told me it was something they had to get out of their minds once and for all. This Champions League final will be their chance to finally pull this festering thorn out of their side. Zidane is looking for a first major trophy as a manager Big occasions are tailor-made for big personalities. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, they say. We saw quite clearly in the recent Europa League final just how important experience is in the final analysis. Both Liverpool and Sevilla could have won but in the end, experience and the big-occasion mentality saw the Spanish side over the line.Real Madrid will know they are currently a winning team and a side with a winning DNA. Above everything else, they will know that they have been here before and that they have prevailed. The two attacksGranted, with a conversion rate of just 13 per cent, and despite a staggering goal tally this season, Cristiano Ronaldo is unquestionably less efficient than he was.But nobody in Europe has more shots than him, and he ends the season in a rich vein of goalscoring form. While he is not at his physical peak, he is certainly in better nick than he was before his last Champions League final, and the World Cup back in 2014. Real Madrids attack has more power than Atleticos, says Balague He will certainly be looking to make a serious impact on this game and to that end, he will be ably supported by the excellent Karim Benzema, who has more than compensated for him when he has fallen slightly short.Ditto Gareth Bale, who is now finally playing more and more in the role that he always wanted at Real Madrid. Bale was always looking to play as a No 10 in the side and despite the efforts of his people and Benitez to ensure that was to be his role, in truth it was only ever going to happen once he had established a relationship with the squad whereby they would allow him to play there. From now on, I think we will see more and more of him in that position, because it is from here that he will be able to win more games for his side. One thing is unquestionable - Real Madrids front three is without a single shadow of a doubt more powerful than Atleticos. For the latter, Torres has improved beyond all recognition since returning to Spain and has scored 12 goals this season, but is still nothing like as lethal as someone like Ronaldo, nor is he as influential as a Bale or a Benzema. Antoine Griezmann is among the top five players in the world, adds Balague The jewel in Atleticos attacking crown comes in the shape of Antoine Griezmann, who just gets better and better. He is now, in my opinion, one of the top five players in world football, not just because of his individual brilliance, but also because of his overall contribution with and without the ball for the teams cause. And team is the word that sums it up. Atletico know more than anyone that there is no I in team, and they may need to score just one goal, or at least score first and then capitalise on the space behind a Real Madrid side that will then be chasing the game.In my opinion, Atletico Madrid are slight favourites - but only just - and I certainly wouldnt put my house on it, simply because there isnt a club in the world that knows how to play these sorts of games better than Real Madrid. NEW YORK -- Yoenis Cespedes was back in the lineup Monday night for the New York Mets, who were still without double-play partners Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera for the first game of a pivotal series against Miami.Wilmer Flores started at second base in place of Walker, sidelined for the second consecutive day by a stiff back. Kelly Johnson was at third, with Jose Reyes sliding over to Cabreras spot at shortstop.Cabrera struck out as a pinch-hitter to end the seventh inning. The NL player of the week last week, Cabrera exited Sundays loss to Philadelphia in the first inning after aggravating a left knee injury that sidelined him twice earlier this year.Cespedes sat out Sunday after his nagging right quadriceps flared up, but the slugger played left field and batted third Monday against Marlins ace Jose Fernandez in the opener of a four-game series. With both teams chasing a wild-card berth, second-place Miami entered a game ahead of the Mets in the NL East.Cabrera went through agility drills before the game. He had trouble running and moving side to side, manager Terry Collins reported.Collins also said he thought Walker would probably be unavailable -- and his status for Tuesday was uncertain.Despite the injuries, the Mets made a curious roster move when they optioned infielder T.J. Rivera to Triple-A Las Vegas to open a spot for right-hander Rafael Montero. That left New York without a healthy backup infielder, because Walker and Cabrera were the only two on the bench. The team had hoped Cabrera or Walker -- maybe even both -- would be able to play.We did not know we were short until about 10 minutes ago, Collins said approximately three hours before the game.Recalled from Double-A Binghamton, Montero started in place of Jacob deGrom, who was skipped to rest and regroup following two poor outings in a row. The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year is expected to return to the rotation Friday night in the series opener against Washington, with Noah Syndergaard to follow on Saturday, Collins said.Yet the Mets chose not to send down rookie Robert Gsellman or any other pitcher -- even though Gsellman probably wont be available for a few days. The right-hander, who threw 94 pitches over six-plus innings Sunday in his first major league start, will likely move to the bullpen once he recovers from his outing, Collins said. That is pending the return of Steven Matz (shoulder), expected to come off the disabled list Thursday to start against Miami. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky focused more on the outcome than the aesthetics against Vanderbilt, taking the most pride in the clutch plays that made it happen.Stephen Johnson rushed for a touchdown and converted a big fourth-and-1 play late in the game leading to Austin MacGinnis 28-yard field goal, and the Wildcats defense stifled the Commodores late to survive with a 20-13 victory on Saturday.Needing a spark to slow Vanderbilts momentum after scoring 10 straight points, the Wildcats turned to their ground game led by Benny Snell Jr. (20 carries, 94 yards) and Jojo Kemp with just under 8 minutes remaining. The duo positioned Kentucky to cash in a third and final time on fourth down as Johnson stretched for 1 yard to the Commodores 19.Our main motto has just been finishing and we did a great job, Kemp said. We just have to keep it going.Kentucky didnt take a chance on a final fourth-and-1 at the 10, and MacGinnis kick with 1:38 left provided a cushion that proved huge as Vanderbilt, with no timeouts, quickly drove 59 yards to the 8 seeking at least a tie. But a costly delay-of-game penalty was sandwiched between several incompletions by Kyle Shurmur, including a fourth-down attempt that went off Kalija Lipscombs hands in the left corner of the end zone with 2 seconds left.Relief and celebration followed as Kentucky (3-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) got halfway toward its goal of becoming bowl eligible, a prospect that seemed unlikely after starting 0-2. The Wildcats also got a measure of revenge against Vanderbilt after losing 21-17 last fall in Nashville.Vanderbilt (2-4, 0-3 SEC) meanwhile fell short in its quest to give coach Derek Mason his first conference road win.Kemp had a 4-yard TD run on a direct snap for the Wildcats. Kemp, Johnson and Stanley Boom Williams each ran for at least 54 yards as Kentucky gained 258 on 52 attempts. Most importantly, the Wildcats made huge, timely plays when needed on bboth sides of the ball to protect a lead that seemed in doubt as the Commodores tried to rally from a 17-3 halftime deficit.ddddddddddddI told them that there was no way in heck that this wasnt going to come down to being a close game, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. I knew theyd hang in there somehow and make a play, get a turnover, make something happen. And thats what happened.Vanderbilts only TD came on Taurean Fergusons 22-yard fumble return early in the third.Commodores running back and SEC rushing leader Ralph Webb had 100 yards on 18 carries and became the schools career leader in attempts. Shurmur completed 17 of 29 passes for 141 yards. We cant afford to get behind and play catch-up football, Mason said. We have to start faster.THE TAKEAWAYVanderbilt: The Commodores converted just 3 of 12 third-down opportunities and couldnt slow the Wildcats ground game. Vandy has dropped all three league contests by 17 combined points.Kentucky: The Wildcats scored a touchdown on their opening drive for the first time this season and seemed to be in control after scoring their second TD just before halftime. They sputtered in the third quarter with two turnovers but still outgained Vanderbilt 307-282.LUCKY BOUNCEVanderbilts Ryan White fumbled two punts, the second of which was right in the hands of Kentucky cornerback J.D. Harmon. But he couldnt corral the loose ball while Bryce Lewis did at the `Dores 7, a reversal of fortune that culminated in Openshaws 26-yard field goal that made it close.UP NEXTVanderbilt: The Commodores hit the road for the fourth time in five games as they visit Georgia on Saturday.Kentucky: The Wildcats have a bye before hosting Mississippi State on Oct. 22.---AP College Football: collegefootball.ap.org---Gary B. NEW YORK -- Matt Sassi is not crazy, nor is he someone who has ever longed for his 15 minutes of fame. He is, however, the kind of guy who believes that when you make a pact with a friend over burritos, its important to keep it.If Bartolo Colon ever hits a home run, Sassi declared during the World Series, Im getting a commemorative tattoo. No one at the table imagined that Sassi would ever have to deliver on his declaration. But you can guess what happened after Colon went deep for his first career home run on May 7 against the Padres. Sassi, a Middletown, New York, native who lives in San Diego, became the proud owner of a giant, grinning, goofy likeness of Colon on his right shoulder. Its a tattoo that is --?like Colon -- somehow both joyful and outlandish. It also might be the best way to explain the Bartolo Colon phenomenon.Ive always been fascinated by him, Sassi said. I feel like he embodies the way the sport should be. He does things that you dont expect him to do, which is what makes him so great. On the surface, its surprising that baseball fans have chosen Colon as the one to adore. Hes a 43-year-old pitcher with a Santa Claus physique and a complicated past: steroids, a nontraditional elbow surgery, a second family. But thats exactly what has happened with Colon the past two seasons. In the twilight of his career, at an age when most great baseball players are limping home, both physically and spiritually, Colon has become something of a national treasure, our round mound of mirth. His jolly stretching exercises, his graceful pirouettes, his wild swings that send his helmet flying, theyve all become part of his legend. Colon is the human GIF that keeps on giving.YOU CAN MEASURE the love for Colon in both anecdotes and facts, but lets start with the obvious: He is still surprisingly good at baseball.Despite being the oldest player in either league and despite throwing essentially one pitch (a fastball, which he relies on 87.8 percent of the time), Colon is ranked in the top 20 in the National League in ERA (2.87), WHIP (1.17) and WAR (2.8). He is the active all-time leader in wins, with 225, a feat that is even more remarkable when you remember that he looked like he was toast in his 30s. He won the Cy Young Award in 2005, but from 2006 to 2009, Colon pitched only 257 combined innings. Then he missed the entire 2010 season because of elbow and rotator cuff injuries, and received a procedure in the Dominican Republic that involved injecting bone marrow and stem cells into his elbow and shoulder.Once a flamethrower, he has since reinvented himself as an artist with pinpoint control. Among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched, only Clayton Kershaw has walked fewer batters than Colon. But stats hardly scratch the surface of Colons appeal. They dont explain why fans print giant pictures of his face and wave them at ballparks around the county. They cant pin down why social media went bonkers after his home run or why players around the league were giggling and texting like teenagers that afternoon. It was just awesome, Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said.I think everybody just loves Big Sexy, Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez said. Ive never heard someone say a single bad thing about him.Colon has become a reminder that sports dont need to be deathly serious all the time. Watch him grab his belly and laugh in the dugout, watch him flip a ball behind his back to make an out, watch him carry his bat to first -- theres an everyman appeal. After Colons home run, Topps put out a $9.99 commemorative trading card to celebrate the feat. So many orders poured in (nearly 9,000 in 24 hours) that the card smashed the companys previous sales record of 1,808 for Jake Arrietas no-hitter.Even James Shields, the man who surrendered the home run, enjoyed the moment.I am a big Bartolo Colon fan. I am a fan of what he is all about, Shields told reporters the day after Colons blast. Obviously, I didnt want it to happen to me. Im happy for him.So the better question might be: Why do we look at Colons faults and vices -- the same things we use to condemn and criticize other athletes -- and shrug our collective shoulders? On May 18, just a week after Colon belted his historic home run, the New York Post published a quintessential tabloid scoop: Colon, who has four children and has been married for 21 years, was being hauled into family court in Manhattan for his failure to pay child support to a Washington Heights woman who was revealed to be the mother of two additional children. The Post described the messy affair as the unmasking of Colons Secret Family. The day the story broke, Colon was scheduled to pitch at home against the Nationals, which meant he would be unable to avoid commenting on the story. The confluence of events had all the makings of a New York media tabloid bonanza, especially when Colon turned in his worst start of the year as he walked five batters and sweated his way through just 4 2/3 innings. As a small pack of reporters waited for Colon postgame, an uncomfortable silence hung over the Mets locker room. But Colon, who conducts all his postgame interviews in Spanish with the help of a translator, seemed unfazed. He stood in front of his locker, a gray T-shirt over his large belly, looking relaxed. Eventually, after a few polite baseball questions, a reporter broached the subject of Colons secret family. Was it difficult to focus tonight with all of that controversy swirling?Colon looked bemused. No, when Im here doing my job, nothing else affects me, he said. Thank God.Did he have any comment on the story? No, I have nothing to add. I dont really care to talk about personal stuff, Colon said, and then he smiled. No one asked another question.Within a week, the controversy -- if it even rose to such a level -- had all but died. It was almost reminiscent of 2012, when Major League Baseball suspended Colon for 50 games after he tested positive for testosterone while a member of the Oakland Athletics. He served his suspension, re-signed with the As, pitched well and made the American League All-Star team the following year. Today, the suspension rarely comes up, unless you mention it to someone in baseball who enjoys speaking his mind. Why is he still pitching so well? Steroids, obviously, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said, then held a poker face for a full five seconds before breaking into a mischievous smile. It was a joke, he said. Its kind of hypocritical, isnt it? What does that say about society? Showalter continued, commenting on why controversy sticks to Colon like Teflon. Some people would say its forgiving. Others would say as long as you pitch well, it doesnt matter. Is it because Colon is goofy and fun and smiles a lot? Thats probably part of it, Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson said.I think people cant help but be drawn to Barts mannerisms, Granderson said. Hes never too high, hes never too low, hes just out there enjoying himself. When youre young, everything about the game is fun. The only thing that changes is youre playing in front of more people, the stands get bigger, theres more people watching. The game should still be the same. We forget that. We tend to be at our best when were having fun, and hes such a great example of that. Its not just Granderson. Matt Harvey said he wishes he could play the rest of his career with Colon. Noah Syndergaard called Colon his personal Yoda, his idol and his mentor. Michael Conforto raved about Colons intelligence and attitude. If you polled the clubhouse, Colon would likely be the teams most popular player. The reasons behind that honor would be simple: He handles the business of pitching like a professional and has no interest in the rest of baseballs pomp and seriousness.Hes not your typical starting pitcher, Mets third baseman David Wright said. Id kind of compare it to the NFL wide receiver, where theyre kind of the divas of the team. They come in, they put their headphones on immediately, they have to eat a certain meal, they get to pick what uniforms we have to wear, what music we listen to. Everything is catered to them for the day. With Bart, its the opposite. Hes walking around slapping guys in the back of the head, making jokes, hes laughing. I really enjoy that. He genuinely enjoys what he does.Every time you think you have Colon figured out, he finds a new way to surprise. In late May, Colon faced the Nationals again, this time on the road. At some point during the game, he decided his back was stiff, so when he came to the plate and Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez threw a knee-buckling changeup, Colon leaned back and told catcher Wilson Ramos to have Gonzalez throw fastballs over the plate. He promised not to swing. True to his word, he didnt.I thought it wasnt worth it to swing, Colon told reporters after the game. I swing at the balls pretty hard, and I thought, not worth making my back worse, so I told their catcher from the beginning, Just throw it right down the middle. Im not swinging. At times, Colon resembles a Will Ferrell sketch, but ... real.?Hes so flexible, he can do the full splits, like a ballerina. Michael Conforto said sometimes he watches Colon run down line drives in the outfield, and he looks -- in short bursts -- like a thick Willie Mays. Hell make crazy catches, and hell go up against the wall, Conforto said. The fans who are there for batting practice, they love seeing him make those crazy catches. But mostly, Colon just makes teammates laugh.Bart had one of the best quotes Ive ever seen, Wright said. Someone asked him if that was his first home run. He said, No, I hit a lot of them in Friday night softball games back home in the Dominican. Thats just him in a nutshell. He loves the game, and he plays softball at home in the offseason, apparently.THERE HAVE BEEN times in Matt Sassis life when he felt a little anxious, lost, even depressed. Raised in Middletown, he went to school there, but not long ago, a job as an accounts payable clerk opened at a community college in San Diego. It required a cross-country move. Soon, Sassi found himself in a big city far from home. What kept him upbeat, of all things, was his lifelong obsession with the Mets. The Mets have always been kind of looked down upon, even with two World Series wins, Sassi said. I see myself as a Met, per se. I was never very good at baseball. But I always loved how upbeat and happy Mets fans were after wins. It was a team that made sense to me. I never wanted to be the kind of person who was really upset if my team loses, like I expected them to win all the time. Theyve just always been something I could be happy about.Loving the Mets can feel like drinking a potent cocktail of comedy, skepticism, hope and longing. But rooting for any baseball team -- an act of communion in which we gather together daily with friends and strangers to believe -- can also be a unifying force.Whenever Colon pitched, Sassis friend Anthony Triola would text him, usually when Colon came to bat, and the two Mets fans living far away from home would pray that this might be the big moment. Until this season, Colon had never hit a home run, but it was his custom to swing from his heels at nearly every pitch. Sassi and Triola would chuckle as they watched Colon helplessly flail at pitches, with his belly jiggling in one direction and his helmet flying in the other. It made for great entertainment, if not great offense. When the Mets traveled to San Diego for a four-game road trip the first week of May, Sassi badly wanted to attend one of the games, especially because the Mets fan club, the 7 Line Army, was organizing an outing for the series. Initially, Sassi thought he wouldnt have enough money for a ticket, but a fellow Mets fan sold him one for a reasonable price, and suddenly, he was at Petco -- with Triola -- surrounded by a pseudo-family of Mets fans.I told a bunch of people in our section about the pact: that if he hit a home run, I was getting a tattoo, Sassi said. But I didnt really think too much about it.In the second inning, facing Colon, Shields tried to sneak a 91 mph fastball over the middle of the plate on a 1-1 count. In that moment, Colon looked more like Babe Ruth than a pitcher with a .094 career batting average. He hammered the ball high in the air and over the left-field fence, and as Mets fans went bonkers, Colon began one of the slowest, most satisfying home run trots in baseball history. On social media, it was pandemonium. Inside the stadium, it was pandemonium. As soon as he swung, my brain exploded, Sassi said. It was insane. Its very hard to describe in words. Actually, I think my brain melted. I was so stoked. Everyone around me just kept screaming, Youve got to get that tattoo! It took the tattoo artist almost four hours to complete his work. It didnt hurt, Sassi said. He felt nothing except joy. When the scars began to heal, he sent a picture of his shoulder to the 7 Line Army blog, and as soon as it was posted, it went viral. Some people said it didnt look like Bartolo at all, that it looked like a California Raisin or that he looked like Chris Christie, Sassi said. Well, I didnt want it to look like an exactly portrait of his face. I wanted it to look a little cartoony. I wanted it to look different. I wanted his helmet to be falling off and him to have a goofy look on his face because thats exactly how it always played out in my head.Sports have a habit of making us cynical, Sassi said. While thats understandable, it doesnt mean you need to give in to it. Years from now, when he looks at his tattoo, Sassi is convinced he wont regret it. All hes going to remember is that moment at Petco Park, when the sun was shining, when he was sitting with one of his best friends and when they witnessed one of the most unlikely moments in baseball history. Its easy to understand why youd want to make a day such as that feel permanent. This wasnt something I felt like I had to do, Sassi said. Its something I really wanted. I wanted to remember that moment.Colon didnt need ink to remember what happened. He called it, without hesitation, the biggest moment of his long career. He took his time, lumbering around the bases with a huge grin on his face. When he finally returned to the dugout, he kept touching his heart. He told his teammates he couldnt believe how quickly it was beating. Larry Johnson Jersey . Woh joh paanch chhalle hote hain, woh bade saubhagya se milte hain (those five rings are reserved for a few fortunate ones), says Nitendra Singh Rawat, who will make up Indias first three-member mens marathon contingent at the Olympics in 56 years. Rawat will be competing alongside Gopi T and Kheta Ram at the Rio games and said ever since his qualification, I have felt an inner motivation, and my desire to work harder has also increased. I feel I must do something good, since I am going to represent my country there.A Havaldar with the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian army, Rawat was the first of the three Indians to qualify for Rio, at the 2015 World Military Games in Mungyeong, Korea in October 2015. His eighth-place finish came with a timing of 2h 18m 6s, well within the qualification mark of 2h 19m.The turning point for Rawats athletic career came when he represented India for the first time in March 2013 at a half-marathon in Korea, coming within seven seconds of the national record. For Rawat, the mark to aim for now in Rio is Shivnath Singhs 38-year-old national record for the marathon: 2h 12m, set in 1978. Shivnath also holds Indias personal best at the Olympics, where he finished 11th at the Montreal games in 1976. Rawat knows those numbers. After securing qualification for Rio in South Korea, Rawat notched up victories in the Delhi half-marathon in November 2015 and the Mumbai marathon in January 2016 -- setting an Indian course record of 2h 15m 48s in the latter -- before picking up the marathon gold at the South Asian Games in Guwahati in February, where he clocked 2h 15m 18s.Rupinder Singh, former national level middle-distance runner and athletics coach, considers Rawat one of the more consistent runners to have emerged from the Services. Hes a Physics graduate, which gives him a better insight into how to prepare. He trains the same way as the other marathoners, but he knows what is required to improve on his own performances, says Rupinder.Rawat grew up in Garur, a town in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. Rawat played a lot of sport as a child, with hockey being his favourite through school. Iss desh mein cricket toh har koi khelta hai (In India, everybody plays cricket at some stage), he adds with a laugh. It wasnt until Rawat joined the Army that he took a liking to running long distances, though his initial distance of choice would be 5000 metres. It helped that if your name came up for a division-level meet, then you would get a vacation for 15 days to recover, Rawat says with a characteristic smile.ddddddddddddRupinder believes that Rawat could and should aim higher at the Olympics. Rio will be tough for our runners, because by and large, they have been clocking in excess of 2h 12m, whereas in Rio, I would expect the best runners to get close to 2h 7m and 2h 10m. The fact that Indian marathoners havent had more success internationally is quite surprising, says Rupinder. The national record was set by Shivnath Singh while running barefoot in Jalandhar in 1978.A discernible lack of ambition among Indian long-distance runners is the root cause for the lack of international medals says Rupinder, while highlighting how opportunities for them have increased within India.Though India have hosted so many marathons in the last few years, the focus is not on improving timing or encouraging younger marathoners. Theres so much of a hardsell to the corporates, thats theres often no incentive to improve on a best timing. Athletics is actually a sport where you can keep rewards much more quantifiable, so that young runners strive to improve their personal best. No doubt, there have been more rewards and more participation, but we still have a long way to go, says Rupinder.Nobody can blame Rawat for lack of ambition, or pragmatism, though. If I hadnt been a marathoner, I would have been running perhaps at the National championship. But I wouldnt have had the aim of doing something for my country, says Rawat. I had a limitation in the 5000m - I could have gone till Asian level, but not till a world level. I say this because I was aware of my speeds. I am what I am because of marathon.Massively inspired by Abhinav Bindras personalised message to all Olympians, and keen to rub shoulders with his track and field heroes including Haile Gebresselasie, Mo Farah and Usain Bolt in Rio, Rawat, whose favourite film Mohabbatein is a fair indication of his fondness for Hindi movies, signs off with a line that would not be out of place in a Bollywood potboiler.Jaise bola jaata hai dawaon se duayein zyaada kaam karti hain (they say prayers work better than medicines), so I would urge my countrymen that they should pray - not just for me but for each and every member of the Olympic contingent. Pray for us so that we can get more and more medals back for the nation. TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes are being treated for MRSA infections. Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik confirmed Thursday that Nicks has an infected blister on the side of his left foot and Tynes has an infected toe on his right foot. MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics. The cases were diagnosed last week while the Bucs were in New England holding joint practices with the Patriots before a preseason game. The team hired a company to sanitize One Buc Place, the teams training facility, last week. A second cleaning has been scheduled as a precaution. "Our primary concern is always the health and safety of our players and staff," Dominik said in a brief statement issued by the team. "Our players were informed of the situation and we sought the advice of experts, including the NFLs medical advisor, who provided counsel and approved of our comprehensive measures including the treatment of our practice facility." The entire roster was informed of the infections Monday. The Bucs said they dont know where Nicks and Tynes, who did not travel to New England, were exposed to MRSA. Both players are responding to treatment, and the club said no other MRSA infections have been discovered among teammates. Nicks, an All Pro two years ago with the New Orleans Saints, has been recovering from surgery on his left big toe and has not played this preseason. He made the trip to New England, practiced, but did not play in the game. Tynes, who helped the New York Giants win a pair of Super Bowls, signed with the Bucs before training camp, but has been sidelined the entire preseason by an ingrown toenail on his kicking foot. RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman said Wednesday the public isnt listening to the message NFL players are trying to send with their actions during the national anthem. While some fans are obsessing about whether players take a knee, raise a fist or lock arms during the national anthem before games, Sherman said they should be talking about the reasons why players are protesting.More videos have come out of guys getting killed, and I think people are still missing the point, Sherman said. The reason these guys are kneeling, the reason were locking arms is to bring people together to make people aware that this is not right. Its not right for people to get killed in the street.Sherman did not take questions during his media availability. Instead, he walked to the podium, said a few words about this weeks opponent San Francisco and then gave a two-minute statement about what players have wanted to accomplish.Shermans message came after a pair of police shootings this week, one in Charlotte, North Carolina, another in Tulsa, Oklahoma.I do a lot of community service. I go out there and try to help kids and try to encourage them to be better and to aspire to more, he said. And when you tell a kid, `When youre dealing with police, just put your hands up and comply with everything, and theres still a chance of them getting shot and no repercussions for anyone, thats an unfortunate time too be living.dddddddddddd Thats an unfortunate place to be in.Shermans statement came as the Seahawks are preparing to face San Francisco on Sunday. Teammate Doug Baldwin told reporters in the Bay Area that members of the Seahawks have had extensive conversations with Colin Kaepernick, who started the conversation with his decision to first sit and then kneel during the national anthem. Its not just the NFL landscape. Its across the country right now, Baldwin said. Obviously, we wouldnt be having this conversation if it wasnt for him bringing it to light. He stood on the table and shouted and got everybodys attention. And now we have to work on the follow through collectively. While Kapenerick and other players have chosen to kneel or raise fists during the anthem, the Seahawks have stood with coaches and players interlocking arms for the first two weeks of the season. Seattle defensive back Jeremy Lane sat during the final preseason game in Oakland but has stood with his teammates the past two weeks. When a guy takes a knee, you can ignore it. You can say hes not being patriotic, hes not honoring the flag, Sherman said. Im doing none of those things. Im saying it straight up. ATLANTA -- On Sunday night, during halftime of the nationally televised Chicago Bears-Dallas Cowboys game, U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III will look into a camera lens and reveal the identity of his 12th and final team member. Its all a big mystery. Many believe its just a formality until Bubba Watsons name is announced. Others think it will be Jim Furyk, who hasnt played in a few weeks. There are even some who inexplicably insist it will be Tiger Woods, who hasnt played in over a year. But it shouldnt be any of them.Love should pound his fist on a podium and scream in his best Mike Singletary impersonation: I want winners!Thats right. The captain should make his intention crystal clear to each of the dozen American players at the Tour Championship who arent already on the roster:Win and youre in.Isnt that what he wanted in the first place? Isnt that the whole reason why the so-called task force pushed back the final captains pick until the eve of the competition? Dont they want to capitalize on picking the hot hand?Instead, Love has remained disappointingly noncommittal. When I asked him last week if hed only consider players who are in this weeks field, he balked at the suggestion. There are guys on our list that are in the Tour Championship and guys on our list that arent in the Tour Championship, he said. Thats why we waited until the last minute, so we would have every option. But he shouldnt want to have every option. He should want a player to force his hand, to feel the pressure on his shoulders all week and perform under that pressure. He should want a player best equipped to deal with the frayed nerves that will undoubtedly develop on the first tee at Hazeltine next week.In other words, he should want exactly what Billy Horschel did two years ago. After winning the BMW Championship, Horschel parlayed that title into another here at East Lake Golf Club, taking the FedEx Cup in the process. He was instantly the hottest golfer in the world, a fiery American player riding a wave of success into the Ryder Cup. The only problem? The final selections were made before Horschel won those events, so he, and the team, never got to reap the benefits. That might not be the lone reason the final wild-card pick was pushed back to after the Tour Championship, but it certainly played a large role. Theres little doubt that if the final pick was made after Horschels season-ending win, he would have gotten the nod.By that logic, Love should open up the competition to every potential candidate. For a team that has lost the past three Ryder Cups and six of the past seven, it could use a jolt of adrenaline from a guy who does exactly what the U.S. team needs: someone who plays his best when it means the most.Lets count the options: Theres Watson, who, as the worlds seventh-ranked player, might be the prohibitive favorite. Theres Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger, a couple of fearless up-and-coming stars. Theres Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell, each of whom have been playing terrific golf lately. Theres major-winner Jason Dufner and long-hitter Gary Woodland. Or gritty Kevin Kisner and consistent Kevin Na. And underdogs Roberto Castro, Will McGirt and Sean OHair.Behind closed doors, Love might root for some more than others. He might prefer the experience of Watson, a two-time Masters champion, over a player like Castro, who is still seeking his first career victory. But that shouldnt affect his final decision if one of these players wins. There is an overarching sense that putting too much pressure on a player is a bad thing, that they shouldnt be expected to perform under such burden. Even Jordan Spieth, who safely qualified for the U.S. team long ago, said as much after practicing earlier this week at Hazeltine with three of his potential teammates.I think its challenging; I think its tough, he said. Justin [Thomas] has admitted that hes put so much pressure on the Ryder Cup this year, he thinks its negatively affected some of his performances, where if it just wasnt on his mind at all, hed have maybe felt a little less stress or pressure trying to grab points at the end of the round instead of just playing his game. ... I think theres added pressure, for sure.Isnt that a good thing? Pressure should be viewed as a positive this week, and the candidate who best deals with it deserves to be on the team.Of course, there is the plausible scenario that the Tour Championship winner will be someone who has already qualified for his respective team: Spieth or Dustin Johnson, or Team Europes Rory McIlroy. Or even Jason Day, who isnt eligible, but hinted he would have enjoyed attending the festivities solely as a fan.In the event that none of the dozen hopefuls wins this tournament, Love and his task force can have a conference call, pore over the analytics and go with the popular pick.If any of these players prevail, though, he should automatically be on the team. Thats the whole reason this pick was pushed back to Sunday night. Its just a shame Love hasnt declared it yet. Its a shame he hasnt looked every potential player in the eye before this tournament and told him these four words: Win and youre in. Balenciaga Sock Runners . LUBBOCK, Texas -- Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield returns to Lubbock to play for the first time since he transferred from Texas Tech three years ago.The redshirt junior from Austin will lead the No. 16 Sooners when they meet the Red Raiders on Saturday night. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops believes Mayfield, whos averaging about 300 yards passing and has 16 TD passes, will manage the situation well.Hes not a freshman, he said. Just stick to whats been positive for him and good for him. The way hes executing, why would you change any of that?Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury, who played Mayfield in eight games in 2013 as a freshman walk-on, doesnt see a lingering issue with the OU quarterback.I mean, any time a player was out of school and comes back, there will be some of that volatility, Im sure, he said. But for me, the way its worked out, its been three years. Its just trying to get prepared to beat a very good OU team.Mayfield says talk of revenge against at his former school is outdated, though he knows hell still have to deal with Texas Tech fans.Thatll be the different part, he said. But for me, its no different than playing any other Big 12 team.Oklahoma (4-2, 3-0 Big 12) is looking for a fourth-straight win and to stay in the hunt for the Big 12 title, while the Red Raiders (3-3, 1-2) aim to rebound after dropping two in a row.A few more things to look for when Texas Tech hosts Oklahoma:OUS RUNNING BACK -- TEXAS TECHS RELIEFTexas Tech must be sighing with relief now that it wont have to defend against Sooners RB Samaje Perine, who is out for at least two weeks with a pulled leg muscle. As a freshman two years ago, Perine rushed for 213 yards on 25 carries against the Red Raiders, and last year he gained 201 yards on 23 carries against Texas Tech. This season he who has rushed for 475 yards and six touchdowns. RB Joe Mixon, who has 476 yards and two touchdowns rushing this season, will carry a bigger load for the Sooners, along with freshman Abdul Adams, whos played in only two games and is averaging 4.dddddddddddd3 yards. Hes going to do whatever it takes to win, Mayfield said about Mixon.QB MATCHUPTexas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, still working to overcome a throwing arm shoulder injury, leads the nation in passing yards per game (429.8), passing yards (2,579) and total offense (455.2 ypg). Last week he had his second-lowest passing yard total this season (305). Mahomes is an exceptional quarterback, Stoops said. Mayfields also got some good national stats: third in pass efficiency (180.4), fifth in completion percentage (70.6) and 12th in passing yards per completion (14.42).DEFENDING THE PASSBoth teams rank near the bottom of Big 12 on defending the pass. The Sooners are ranked ninth, giving up 277.3 passing ypg, while the Red Raiders are one slot ahead, allowing 274.3 passing ypg. Each team has a top-notch receiver. Texas Techs Jonathan Giles is the leagues leading receiver (7.2 catches and 125 yards per game). Oklahomas Dede Westbrook is averaging as many catches as Giles but a few yards fewer (121.3). Defenses are definitely going to start keying on him, said Westbrooks WR colleague Mark Andrews. I think its something that they have to do. Its going to open up the run game and other guys in the receiving corps.PENALTY PROBLEMSTexas Tech is last in the nation for number of penalties per game (9.67), having been penalized 58 times in six games for 504 yards. The Red Raiders had 10 penalties for 103 yards in the loss to West Virginia, including a personal foul against offensive tackle Justin Murphy, who was ejected and wont play the first half against the Sooners. Kingsbury said hell hold players accountable. Theyll come out of the ballgame and wont play much, if that occurs moving forward. Then theyll have punishment during that week as well.---AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.orgCheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '
DETROIT -- Joe Mauer provided the early power, and P.J. Walters gave Minnesota the start it needed on that mound. Now the Twins can finally move on after an ugly 10-game losing streak. Mauer homered and had three hits, and the Twins snapped their skid with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Walters was solid in his first major league appearance of the season. He was called up from the minors before the game. "It feels good to get out from under that 10-gamer," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, who was ejected in the third inning. "We got out to a quick start, and then we had to hold on for a long time against a really good team. Thats not an easy lineup to shut down, but P.J. did a great job. He got us deep enough and then our bullpen finished it off." Mauer had already earned the ire of Detroit fans when he broke up Anibal Sanchezs no-hit bid in the ninth inning Friday night. He was booed when came to bat in the first inning Saturday -- then booed some more after his solo homer to right field. The Twins scored three runs in the first, and that was enough. Walters (1-0) went six innings, allowing two runs and eight hits. Mauer had two singles to go along with his homer. "Mauer is Mauer," Detroit catcher Brayan Pena said. "Sometimes you make great pitches to him, and he still can hit you." Four relievers finished for the Twins, with Glen Perkins pitching the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances. Detroits Doug Fister (5-2) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Jhonny Peralta homered for the Tigers. Gardenhire was ejected while arguing a call in the third inning. Mauers first-inning drive was ruled a homer, then reviewed because the ball bounced back into the field of play. A replay showed it hit the top of the wall in right, but may have also glanced off a railing above the wall. The call stood. The Twins werent done. After being shut down in Sanchezs one-hitter the previous evening, they broke through right away against Fister. Justin Morneaus RBI double made it 2-0, and he came in to score on Chris Parmelees single. Walters got out of a jam in the second when Andy Dirks struck out with the bases loaded. The following inning, Gardenhire was ejected. The Twins had men on first and second with nobody out when Morneau hit a grounder to first baseman Prince Fielder. He threw to second, and the Tigers turned a double play -- but Mauer, who had advanced to third on the play, was sent back to second because of an interference call. Josh Willingham had gone sliding into Peralta, the shortstop. Gardenhire came out to argue and was thrown out of the game by second base umpire Joe West. "His call was that he slid too close to the bag or something. He told me that he was protecting the defender, just like he had always protected me when I was playing," Gardenhire said. "I said Joe, I didnt play that much." Detroits Miguel Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a first-inning single, but that was his only hit. Torii Hunter got the Tigers on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, but Cabrera struck out to end that inning. Peralta made it a one-run game in the sixth with his fifth homer of the year. "It was just location. I was able to keep the ball down on almost every pitch, and thats huge against that lineup," said Walters, who was making his first major league appearance of the season. "I got one pitch up to Torii, and I got another one up on the homer, but those were the only big mistakes." Twins centre fielder Wilkin Ramirez left the game after a scary collision on a fly ball. Omar Infante lifted a fly to left-centre in the sixth, and left fielder Willingham was under it when Ramirez came speeding over to try to make the play. Ramirez did catch the ball, holding onto it for the third out after colliding with Willingham. Ramirez remained down on the ground well into the break between innings. He was finally able to walk off under his own power, but when he got back to the dugout, he appeared to be flexing his jaw. NOTES: The Tigers honoured their 1968 World Series-winning team before the game. ... It was the 64th ejection of Gardenhires career and second this season. ... Fister struck out seven and walked one. ... Minnesotas Chris Colabello had a sixth-inning single -- his first major league hit. ... Northampton expect George North to be cleared by specialists to return to action in Fridays Aviva Premiership clash with Sale Sharks.Wales wing North has been stood down since appearing to lie motionless following a dangerous tackle from Adam Thompstone in Saints 19-11 defeat to Leicester on Dec. 3.A Concussion Management Review Group (CMRG), drawn up to investigate the handling of Norths potential head injury, is now expected to reveal its findings Wednesday.Northampton rugby director Jim Mallinder remains confident, however, that North will be free to face Sale at Franklins Gardens on Friday.Hes back in training and he should be available to play against Sale, said Mallinder. As I said hes been training [on Tuesday], hes had a bit of time off and hes feeling really good about himself, hes looking really sharp out there and hes looking forward to playing.George is actually going back to the specialists, just to check again that everythings okay. Im not making decisions on whether he plays or not, thats out of my hands.Thats down to the trained professionals to make the right judgements. And surely theres no better people to make those correct decisions.North was allowed to return to action after his heavy fall against Leicester, with Northampton since admitting the 24-year-old could have suffered a head injury despite him passing pitch-side checks. The concussion management panel that should release its findings on Wednesday has comprised of the RFU professional rugby director Nigel Melville, Premiership Rugbys rugby director Phil Winstanley and independent chairman Dr Julian Morris. The first-ever such panel that was convened on Dec. 5 will have now taken 16 days to finalise its conclusions should those be released Wednesday.North had a six-month spell out of the game in 2015 after a clutch of high-profile head injuries. Now though, Mallinder believes the British and Irish Lions star is back in rude health. Its something that happened a few weeks ago, and thankfully George is fine, said Mallinder. Physically hes been fine since the incident. So were just waiting to hear from the report, and then well make our comment after that. I dont want to comment on the investigation any more, I spoke at length last week.Whats important now is that it comes out and we can comment on it then. Weve said it right from the beginning: player welfare is the most important thing. If theres any doubts the medics will come and talk to me and we will stand players down. So player welfare is number one.Northampton will head into Fridays league clash with Sale fresh from the humiliating 60-13 European Champions Cup defeat to Leinster in Dublin. The Saints rotated their resources for the Aviva Stadium rout, leading to criticism of that selection.Tournament organisers European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) could yet launch an investigation to determine whether Saints fielded a strong enough XV.EPCR reviews all selections as a matter of course, and is yet to determine whether to launch any investigation into Northampton. We stick by our decision, in that weve got a squad we register at the beginning of the season that we think are good enough to play in Europe, said Mallinder. And we played that squad. We did register one extra player, young James Fish who came in for Dylan Hartley, for obvious reasons. So thats what we decided to do, and hopefully the experience and freshness gained from them playing last week, hopefully that will benefit us down the line. DAVIE, Fla. -- Even though Adam Gase is the youngest coach in the NFL, he has more experience with meaningful December games than many of his Miami Dolphins players. And when Gase says the seasons about to change, hes not talking about winter. The later you get in the season, with every game the importance increases, he said Monday. The stakes go up. Everything starts to feel different in December. For the Dolphins (7-4), thats especially true this year. A six-game winning streak has them in control of their playoff future heading into Sundays road game against the Baltimore Ravens (6-5).Theyre in the hunt, too, said ninth-year pro Branden Albert, one of the Dolphins elder statesmen. Its going to be a tough game. Its a game you want to play. The opportunitys a novel one for the Dolphins, who have their best record through 11 games since 2003. They havent been to the playoffs since 2008, and only one current player -- long snapper John Denney -- was then on the team.I dont know how many guys we have who have actually been through this, players who have had experience where December gets a little interesting, Gase said. Its minimal.Gase, 38, is in his first year as an NFL head coach. But he was the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos when they reached the 2014 Super Bowl. Many Dolphins players, including fifth-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill, have never even been on a team that finished over .500. Theyre looking to remedy that in the next month. We just have to stick to what were doing, Tannehill said. Nothing changes around here. One more victory would give the Dolphins their longest winning streak since 1985, but theyre not exacctly dominating the league.dddddddddddd.The past five victories have all come by a touchdown or less. On Sunday against woeful San Francisco, the Dolphins gave up a season-high 475 yards and needed a stop at their 2-yard line on the final play to win 31-24.Against Baltimore, Miami may be without starters in the offensive line for the third week in a row.Gase said its unlikely center Mike Pouncey (hip) will return Sunday, and left tackle Albert (left wrist) said hes uncertain about his availability. Left guard Laremy Tunsil (shoulder) is the most likely to return.Without the trio, the ground game lacked its usual punch against the 49ers, and Jay Ajayi was held to 45 yards in 18 carries. But Tannehill threw for 285 yards and three scores without a turnover. We know there are going to be games we may not be able to run the ball, and were going to have to pass the ball like 30, 40 times, receiver Jarvis Landry said. I love it.Denvers loss Sunday night to Kansas City gave the Dolphins the edge in the race for the final AFC wild-card spot. But players say theyre paying no attention to the standings.People bring it up, but I really dont care, Albert said. You cant pay attention to that. You concentrate on individual games, because you never know how things are going to end up.Spoken like a veteran.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL.---Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve-Wine. LOS ANGELES -- Clay Helton, whose first season as head coach of No. 20 USC begins against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium (8 p.m. ET, ABC), is replacing more than just a coach. He is replacing an era. When Pat Haden, the former Trojans athletic director, took interim off of Heltons title last November, USC formally stopped trying to extend Pete Carrolls nine-year tenure of glitz and glamour.USC is not Hollywood, Helton said.Wait just a minute, Coach. Or should we say Cut!?John Wayne played for USC, for heavens sake. Frank Gifford and O.J. Simpson glided through the Trojans line and into TV careers. During Carrolls wildly successful tenure -- two national championships, three Heisman Trophy winners, seven conference championships and 28 All-Americans -- USC became Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian. Matt Leinart and Lindsay Lohan. Snoop Dogg and Will Ferrell on the sideline.Thats exactly who the new head coach of USC isnt. Carroll, the bling coach, is gone. His successors, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, melted in front of TMZs lights. They proved ill-equipped to handle the pressures of trying to win with their hands tied by NCAA probation. The devastating penalties took away 30 scholarships over three seasons and resulted in USC being stripped of two Pac-12 titles and Bushs Heisman. The probation is over, too, and there is a sense of a fresh start at USC. Sarks replacement, Helton, hunts alligators. Hes courtly and self-deprecating, two traits that every Southern parent demands. His mantra is faith, family and football, and those items are not just in alphabetical order. And the only Kim hanging around the Trojans these days is Heltons father. Kim Helton was the head coach of the Houston Cougars for seven seasons and spent 12 as an NFL assistant. To repeat, USC is not Hollywood, at least in the mind of its new head coach. When you think of the names Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott, Marv Goux, a legendary [assistant] coach here, you just think of toughness and physicality, Clay Helton said. Those are the things that have won championship after championship here. The image of Carrolls teams was of a regular lunchpail crew, if you buy your lunchpails at Prada. It is customary in college football to hire a new coach who is the opposite of the old, failed predecessor. A disciplinarian follows a players coach. A defensive guru takes over from a guy who kept all the talent on offense. So, ditch the limo; cue the Ford F-150. Lets all pretend that USC has left La La Land (meaning Tinseltown, not the new Emma Stone-Ryan Gosling romantic comedy).Take the new discipline inside the Trojans locker room. Before Helton took over, if a player skipped a class, he got two hours of physical drills. Now, if a player skips a class, his whole position group gets the extra work. You had guys who would book it in their weekly schedule, their two-hour punishment, quarterback Max Browne said. They may miss class, and on Friday afternoon, I might die for those two hours, but Ill be able to sleep through a class for the rest of the way. Its one thing if you miss a class, you get punished yourself and only yourself. But when your teammates are also getting punished? Thats a whole other element.Take the feeling of family. Clay hired his brother, Tyson, to coordinate the Trojans passing game. You can cry nepotism, at least until you see that for the last two seasons, he ran the Western Kentucky offense in which Brandon Doughty threw for 9,885 yards and 97 touchdowns.Tyson Helton brought offensive line coach Neil Callaway with him. Callaway was on the Auburn staff when Clay Helton signed there as a quarterback in 1990. Callaway spent four seasons as Kim Heltons offensive coordinator at Houston. Kim Helton spent five seasons as Callaways offensive coordinator at UAB.Callaway started for Bear Bryant on the Alabama team that beat USC in 1977. He spent more than two decades as an assistant at Auburn, Georgia and Alabama before he went to UAB. Callaway has a voice thats part syrup, part metal grinder. Actually, he just grinds up players. He brings us Southern hospitality, Southern gentlemanship and very much a Southern toughness, Clay Helton said. I just knew that experience, that knowledge, that toughness and physicality was something that I really wanted for our culture.Helton warned his offensive line.I said, Guys, just understand, Helton said. Youre going to think this guy is literally the devil. But after a month youre going to love him, because youre gonna know hes going to make you better as a player. After three sessions of spring practice, offensive tackle Zach Banner cornered Helton in the locker room and said, Coach, know this. Were taking Coach Callaway out to dinner and youre never going to see him again because were going to kill him.We got a good bunch of guys, Callaway said of his players. I dont mean theyre all angels. I aint saying that. But all the kids are into ball. Its important to them. There aint been a whole lot of Trojans assistant coaches saying aint lately.Take the way that Helton and his staff are coaching. The players understand why theyre so tough. He loves us, you know what Im saying? Toa Lobendahn said of Helton. A big thing in life for me is giving out love. I feel hes a big proponent of that. The way he treats us and respects us and even coaches us, thats the way we want it to be.The only time Ive ever seen him get [upset] is if weve done something outside of football -- if weve left our dining area dirty and [the custodial staff] had to clean up for us and he had to hear about it, or we left our players lounge dirty.Hes probably the most genuine guy Ive ever met, not even just [in] football but outside of it, Browne said of Helton. All of which shows how Helton is wrong. USC is still Hollywood, but under Helton, its rated G. Frank Capra would have loved him.Helton was practically born in a college football stadium. Kim was a graduate assistant at Florida in 1972, the year Clay was born.Heck, the first year of my life were living in the Swamp, Helton said. Were living in the dorms right at the stadium. I grew up in the profession. As a quarterback at Auburn and then for his dad at Houston, Helton proved he would be a better coach than player. As soon as he graduated, Duke head coach Fred Goldsmith, an old colleague of Kim, made Clay a graduate assistant. A year later, at age 23, Helton became the Blue Devils running backs coach. He went into the family business. The construction business lost a hardhat.I think my mom is still mad at me, Helton said. I was nine hours short of a mechanical engineering degree. I had enough hours to get an interdisciplinary math and science degree.Helton spent 10 seasons as an offensive assistant coach at Memphis, rising to the job of offensive coordinator. He coached All-America running back DeAngelo Williams. And in his last season, 2009, as the Tigers plummeted to a 2-10 record that cost head coach Tommy West and his staff their jobs, Helton made an impression. When Memphis lost to Tennessee and first-year head coach Lane Kiffin, 56-28, the Tigers rushed for 210 yards and threw for 193. After the season, Monte Kiffin, the Vols defensive coordinator and Lanes dad, called Helton. He said, Clay, yall did the best job against us. Do you mind taking me through what you saw? Were going to play Virginia Tech [in the Chick-fil-A Bowl]. I feel like theyre going to do some of the things that you did. What did you see? So we ended up talking for a couple of hours, Helton said.Helton left Memphis and landed at Arkansas State. Weeks later -- so soon after the move that Helton was still sleeping on the floor of his new Jonesboro office -- Monte Kiffin called again. Lane had gone to USC and he needed a quarterback coach. Helton agreed to interview after signing day.Not thinking that I have a chance in hell, he said, laughing. Got through signing day, came out here, and something just clicked. ... Probably some guys said no, and youre the one left standing. Something clicked. Like I told everybody, I felt like I won the lottery coming out here.Helton weathered the storms of coaching under Kiffin and Sarkisian. When interim head coach Ed Orgeron refused to coach the Trojans in the 2013 Las Vegas Bowl, Helton took over. And when USC fired Sarkisian after five games last season, Helton took over again. The Trojans went 5-2 over the rest of the regular season, and the day after they beat crosstown rival UCLA to clinch the Pac-12 South championship, Helton lost his interim status. If you want to see people who think they won the lottery, watch the video of the teams reaction when Haden told the USC players their new coach would be their current coach. It looks like every World Series celebration youve ever seen, minus the champagne. With all of Heltons new responsibilities, Browne said his head coach hasnt changed one bit. The feeling around the team, though, changed a lot.Less on edge, I guess, Browne said. Just to be going out and playing a game, playing football, I think it was nice to just kind of move on from all that. It just seemed more free, and I dont want to say that because it makes it sound like it was unstructured. It wasnt unstructured. But it seemed like guys were just going out there and having fun.If there is to be a Clay Helton era at USC, the lights, camera and action begin Saturday night. USC football is still Hollywood. Theres just a new guy in charge of the studio. Chaussures Homme Air Max 97 . MORITZ, Switzerland -- Fog prevented downhill racers from getting their Olympic dress rehearsal. ARCADIA, Calif. -- As a championship event, the 2016 Breeders Cup delivered, and especially in tremendous renewals of the Classic and Distaff. But while there is some important stakes racing left this year, mainly on Thanksgiving weekend, most of this years Eclipse Award divisions were decided by the time official went up on the tote board following Saturdays Classic.Lets take a look at the 10 equine Eclipse Award divisions on the flat, and the impact this Breeders Cup had on them, with a brief comment on Horse of the Year honors at the end:Older Dirt Male: California Chrome had this title wrapped up months ago with a compelling body of work highlighted by powerful victories in the Dubai World Cup and Pacific Classic. His narrow loss in Saturdays Classic, without any excuse, by the way, will have no bearing on him winning this divisional championship in a landslide.Older Dirt Female: Beholder might have temporarily ceded leadership in this division when Stellar Wind beat her for a second time in the Zenyatta after first edging her in the Clement L. Hirsch, but Beholder wrested it back Friday with her gutsy win in the Distaff. Taking nothing away from Songbird, who was gallant in narrow defeat in the Distaff after setting the pace, but the Distaff pace never really developed the way it figured to do so. In fact, the pace in the Distaff was downright moderate. Beholder ran better than her tiny win margin would suggest because she overcame a setup that wasnt entirely favorable. So Beholder will get what will be her fourth Eclipse Award, all earned in different years, and that is quite a feat.3-Year-Old Male: It would have been impossible to imagine a colt who hadnt even started in a stakes race on Aug. 26 could win this championship. But on Aug. 27, Arrogate delivered an explosive performance winning the Travers Stakes, a performance so exceptional that it suddenly put him in the conversation with Nyquist and Exaggerator for divisional honors. And when Nyquist proved unable to follow up on his strong Kentucky Derby win, apparently being cooked for good in a senseless Preakness speed duel, and when Exaggerator proved that his big wins this year were entirely functions of wet tracks and perfect pace setups, the path for Arrogate became more clear. He had to win the Classic to close the deal, which he did in a performance just as impressive as his Travers, but for a different reason. To run down a loose-on-the-lead monster like California Chrome is incredible stuff. Arrogate is hands down the champion 3-year-old male, and I cant wait to see what he does next year.3-Year-Old Female: When she romped in the Cotillion on Oct. 1, Songbird obliterated any potential scenario that could have denied her another divisional championship this year. But her game effort in the Distaff while racing near an inside that some thought might not have been the best part of the Santa Anita main track on Friday only enhanced the case that she should be a unanimous champion. Really, shame on any Eclipse Award voter who does not have her on top of their ballot.2-Year-Old Male: Without question, Classic Empire clinched this title by vi
MIAMI -- Dwyane Wades rookie season ended with a playoff loss to the Indiana Pacers. The next year, the Miami Heat were headed to the Eastern Conference finals and certain that an NBA championship was in their sights. Thats when Wade learned a valuable lesson: Never take playoff chances for granted. Wade hurt his rib cage on a simple crossover dribble during that 2005 East title series, and the Heat season ended with a Game 7 home loss to Detroit. Hes been to the East finals three times since, prevailing in them all, and on Wednesday will look to take a first step toward a fourth conference championship when the Heat play host to the Pacers in Game 1 of their playoff rematch from a year ago. "I know Im blessed to be going to the Eastern Conference finals for my fifth time," Wade said. "But I would like a lot more in my career. Its a good thing. Weve been very successful in my tenure here. But I want more." For Wade and Udonis Haslem, this marks five East finals appearances in nine years. For LeBron James, its a fifth trip to this round in the past seven years, now three straight with Miami after a pair of trips to the East finals with Cleveland. For Ray Allen, its a fourth East title-round trip in six years, the first three of those coming with Boston. Experience, it all favours Miami. For the Pacers, this is pretty much uncharted waters. Only one current Pacers player has ever appeared in a conference-final game, and that was backup big man Ian Mahinmi, who played exactly 71 seconds in one game of the 2011 West title series without so much as taking a shot. Nonetheless, the Pacers seem far from bothered by the fact that this stage is a new place for them. "Theres four teams left playing basketball in the NBA and this is something weve been looking forward to all year," Pacers forward David West said. "We lost to this team in the second round last year, so weve already gotten a step farther this season." Indiana took Miami to six games last season, leading the series 2-1 at one point, and left an impact on the Heat with words, actions and play. The series was always physical, at times bloody, and it took some superb efforts by Wade and James for Miami -- which was without Chris Bosh for 5 1/2 of those six games -- to put the Pacers away. Its not in the nature of either of these teams to back down from physicality, and tough play will almost certainly be a theme in this series. But if theres one thing the Pacers and Heat agree upon, its that this series will be decided by execution, not intimidation. "I think this will be about substance," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "This series has plenty to offer without hard fouls and trash-talking. Its going to be about basketball." The Heat are overwhelming favourites, at least according to the Las Vegas oddsmakers, who apparently arent putting much stock in that it was the Pacers who prevailed in two of the three meetings between the teams this season. In turn, the Heat arent putting much stock in expectations. Even though its starting to seem like an annual event, getting to the conference final round, Heat players insist that its still as big a deal now as it ever was. "Its an opportunity for me to continue my dream and thats to compete for a championship," said James, the leagues reigning MVP for the second straight year and fourth time overall. "Im happy that Im in the position Im in, with great teammates and a great organization. Ive just got to do my part." Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was an assistant on that team -- Shaquille ONeals initial season in Miami -- that fully expected to be Finals-bound in 2005. Then Wade got hurt, and everything changed. "I let myself get too far ahead," Wade said. "I was thinking, Championship, were on our way. I was riding the wave. It was awesome. Then it smacked me -- Pow! -- and it just takes one moment to change. Stupid. All I did was crossover. Did a stupid crossover pullup, I dont know what happened and it changed everything for us. Thats when you learn, you dont know whats going to happen." Wade isnt 100 per cent this time around either, though has said in recent days that his bruised right knee is good enough for him to play. He doesnt even plan on missing any more practice time this season. The Pacers have some mild injury concerns as well, with West dealing with an injury to his lower right leg and 7-foot-2 centre Roy Hibbert needing a tape job on his right thumb after a hit in practice earlier this week. Theyre both expected to play Wednesday. "I think it will be a good series," Pacers forward Paul George said. "Obviously, we remember what happened last year and it will be on our mind when we face this team. Were not just happy to get to this stage, we want to get past this one, too." George has deservedly earned high marks this season for his offensive growth. The Pacers hopes in this series might hinge upon his defence. He went from guarding Carmelo Anthony in the second round to knowing that hell be facing off plenty in this series against James -- who Vogel called "the best player, the best offensive player in the world." "He has to do the same kind of thing he did on Carmelo," Vogel said of George. "He has to come out and compete the best he can and do it without fouling." James told teammates on Tuesday that hes raring to go, especially so since the Heat havent played in about a week. He was working after practice on his floating jumpers, something he employed against the massiveness of Hibbert last season and a trick he wont be afraid to pull out and use again in this series. "Its been go time," James said. "Since the playoffs started, its been go time. And I love the way weve been playing so far." VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- In their first game back after a tough six-game road trip, the Vancouver Canucks looked like a team hoping to wipe away some bad memories.Troy Stecher tied it with 1:40 left in the third period and Markus Granlund scored in overtime, helping Vancouver rally to beat the Dallas Stars 5-4 on Sunday.Dallas held leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but Vancouver got goals from Louis Eriksson, Brandon Sutter, Bo Horvat and Stecher to force overtime. The Canucks were coming off a 1-5 trip and have two wins in their last 12 games. It was a tough (road trip) for us, but its good to be back home and this was a good win for us, Granlund said. Everybody in this room is sticking together and playing for each other.Granlund scored 1:27 into overtime by finding a loose puck off a faceoff and snapping it past goalie Kari Lehtonen. That came after Stecher slapped a puck through Lehtonens legs, sending the arena into a frenzy. It was the first NHL goal for the 22-year-old rookie defenseman. It was a good feeling, Stecher said. But getting that win on home ice is a lot better feeling. Im sure you guys can see it throughout the room -- the vibes are up and we feel pretty good.Ryan Miller made 17 saves for Vancouver.Patrick Eaves scored twice and Lauri Korpikoski and Antoine Roussel also scored for the Stars, who wrapped up a five-game road trip 2-1-2.We were right there, Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. We made a little mistake on (Stechers goal), just on coverage going out to the point. If we played that better, that puck definitely doesnt go in.Lehtonen stopped 25 shots for Dallas, which had won 10 straight against the Canucks.Dallas had our number lately, Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. I dont know if it was a must-win, but it certainly was a big win for us, and we needed to score some goals. It was good we battled in the third. I thought we showed great resiliency to stay with it.Eaves, Horvat and Korpikoski scored during a one-minute span early in the first period. Eaves knocked in a rebound past Miller at 5:43, but Horvat tied it at 6:05 with a wrist shot off Lehtonens shoulder. Korpikoski put Dallas back ahead on a 2-on-1 with Radek Faksa 20 seconds later.Eaves made it 3-1 with 4:56 left in the second. Tyler Seguin got his second of three assists with a cross-ice pass to Eaves, who one-timed a shot by Miller.Eriksson scored 3:26 into the third when a Stars turnover allowed Granlund to get the puck to him in the slot. The struggling forward put it through Lehtonens legs for his second goal of the season.Sutter tied it on the power play by finding the net from the slot with Lehtonen screened at 6:06 into the third.A defensive gaffe put Dallas back ahead. The puck deflected off Nikita Tryamkins skate and hit Millers pad before popping out right to Roussels stick for a tap in with 8:11 remaining. The Canucks appeared to tie it when Burrows shoveled in a loose puck in the crease, but Dallas successfully challenged for goaltender interference to overturn the goal.Game notes Stetcher was playing in his seventh game. After 16 years, five Olympics and six world championships, Michael Phelps career has finally drawn to a close. Or so he insists. But to put his jaw-dropping accomplishments into perspective, you have to dig a bit deeper. Phelps was born with a gift and worked tirelessly to maximize its potential.I want to be able to look back and say, Ive done everything I can, and I was successful, Phelps told ESPN before the Olympics. I dont want to look back and say I should have done this or that.He is without question the greatest swimmer who ever lived, and arguably the greatest athlete of our generation, as well. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr.?said Titans wide receiver Harry Douglas tried to end my career with a low hit on Harris right knee in the second quarter of Tennessees?13-10 win Sunday at Nissan Stadium. On a 6-yard run by Derrick Henry with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first half, Harris was standing away from the pile in the middle of the field when Douglas dove at his right knee.Harris, who suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in 2013, pulled his right leg back just after contact or any injury likely could have been much worse. He fell to the ground after the hit, clutching his right knee. After a few moments down on the field, he walked slowly back to the bench area with the teams trainers. Harris returned to the game before halftime and played the entire second half.I never had a player try to end my career before, Harris said. Thats not football. He tried to end my career with a hit like that. ... [The officials] didnt call it, but hopefully the league can take a look at that.Minutes later, as he walked to the team bus, Harris added, Whatever the biggest fine is, thats what he should get.Douglas seemed to think otherwise.First of all, thats a clean play, Douglas said. It was a run play with me and him looking at each other, and I cut-blocked him. Like I told them, if they watch film, which theyre supposed to do in the NFL, you would know I can cut-block in the run game and thats a legal play. I guess he didnt watch film because if they watched me last week or any other game he would say thats what I do in the run game.Douglas hit left plenty of hard feelings. On the following play, with Aqib Talib lined up on Douglas, the Broncos cornerback confronted the receiver after another run play. The two ended up pushing and shoving close to the Titans bench area. Shortly after, several more Titans players had surrounded Talib before more Broncos players waded into the scrum.Officials got the players separated, and Talib was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty. Three plays later, Ryan Succop kicked a 41-yard field goal to give the Titans a 13-0 lead.Talib minced no words after the game, calling Douglas a sorry player, and continued on saying the next time I see him in Atlanta Im going to beat his ass, since both Talib and Douglas are represented by the same agent.I was just standing there. I was nowhere near the play, Harris said. I mean, somebody tries to end your career, I cant believe he did it.The league likely will review the play in the coming days, and there is potential for a fine for Douglas. After the game, Douglas was asked whether he was concerned if the Titans eventually had to face the Broncos again in a playoff game.Yall forgot who won today? Douglas said. I aint worried about playing no one in no playoffs. ... The way we play the game of football, we dont care who we play.Harris said his knee was sore after the game and that he didnt feel 100 percent after the hit.I was nowhere near the play, but thats why hes out there, to be a dirty player, Harris said.Douglas then responded to the accusations of him being a dirty player.Im a tough player. Im a gritty player, he said. Im not a dirty player, no matter what anybody says.NFL Nation reporter Paul Kuharsky contributed to this report.
