WASHINGTON -- In a game long overdue for a clutch hit, along came Hanley Ramirez with a man on second and none out in the 10th inning. Ramirez already had two singles, but the other team pitched to him anyway. He raised his average to .390 and essentially won the game with an RBI double, the kind of clutch hit the Los Angeles Dodgers have been getting lately -- and the sort of thing that has totally deserted the Washington Nationals. Ramirez drove in Adrian Gonzalez, then scored on Andre Ethiers sacrifice fly in Saturday nights 3-1 win. Among the teammates congratulating Ramirez in the dugout was starter Zack Greinke, who wondered why the Nationals bothered to throw the Dodgers cleanup hitter a strike. "He said: Even me, I would have walked you," Ramirez said. As it turned out, Ramirez and Greinke -- who raised his average to.406 -- combined for half the Dodgers 10 hits, but everything seems to be going right for a team that has won seven of nine and 19 of 24 to pull within a half-game of the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. "Were winning all kinds of different ways as the momentum has started to go our way," manager Don Mattingly said. "We lost of lot of these early in the year, but now it seems like were hanging in there, feeling like were going to win these." Ethier won Fridays game with a ninth-inning homer, and the first two games of the series yielded outcomes that kept the teams trending in opposite directions. The Nationals have lost seven of nine to fall below .500 and into third in the NL East. They went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and are 2 for 21 with RISP in the series. "Im sure everyone is sick of hearing it, but its got to turn around at some point," Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond said. "And if it doesnt, then were going to keep on trying until we run out of time." In seven of the 10 innings, the Nationals had legitimate scoring chances. They looked like a rock band that decided to play all of its worst hits on the same night. First inning: bases loaded, none out. Second inning: leadoff double. Third inning: pair of one-out singles. Fourth inning: leadoff single. Seventh inning: first and second, one out. Eighth inning: first and third, one out. They failed to score each time. In the fourth, they managed three consecutive fielders choices. Even Greinke is mystified. "They should be scoring more than they have," Greinke said. Greinke allowed the only Nationals run on his final pitch, when pinch-hitter Roger Bernadina hit an RBI single and was thrown out trying to advance to second, ending the sixth inning. The run ended Greinkes scoreless innings streak at 21, a Dodgers season-high. Jose Dominguez, Paco Rodriguez, Ronald Belisario, J.P. Howell, Chris Withrow and Kenley Jansen did the rest. Withrow (1-0) pitched the ninth for his first career win, and Jansen handled the 10th for his 11th save as the Nationals fans, clearly running out of patience, booed their team off the field. The Nationals wasted a solid outing from starter Gio Gonzalez, who matched a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Greinke, who had won five consecutive starts, scattered seven hits and remained one shy of 100 career wins. The Dodgers keep winning even though rookie Yasiel Puig has cooled off. He is 0 for 9 with five strikeouts in the series. "You see a little bit of confusion up there," Mattingly said. "Theyre starting to do some things to him -- he seems to be caught in-between a little bit. Hell be OK. He just needs to catch his wind and clear his head a little bit." The home side were 152-3 at stumps after Zafar Ansari (2-33) broke an 86-run stand between Mahmudullah (47) and Imrul Kayes (59no) with two minutes of play remaining - the spinner claiming his second Test wicket after removing Tamim Iqbal earlier for 40.Bangladeshs position would have been stronger but for a 99-run stand for the ninth wicket between Chris Woakes (46) and Adil Rashid (44no) that enabled England to recover from 144-8 to 244 all out in their first innings - the tourists losing their way despite Joe Roots 23rd Test fifty, as teenager Mehedi Hasan (6-82) became the first Bangladesh player to take two five-wicket hauls in his first two Tests. Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid revived England from 144-8 With the cracked pitch expected to deteriorate in the coming days, Bangladesh - 1-0 down in the two-match series after their 22-run defeat in Chittagong - remain firmly in the hunt for their first ever Test win over England. The tourists began the day 170 runs behind on 50-3 in their first innings and were quickly in trouble on a turning pitch as Moeen Ali swept across a Mehedi delivery and Mominul Hasan pounced at short leg to gobble up a bat-pad chance offered by Ben Stokes off Taijul Islam (3-65), who also had Root dropped at slip on 19 in the same over. From 69-5 Root and Jonny Bairstow (24) carefully rebuilt with a sixth-wicket stand of 45 in 16.3 overs - the ball frequently spinning past the edge - the pair using their feet well to rotate the strike. Joe Roots fifty was an innings of craft and supreme focus Englands deficit was still a sizeable 106, though, when Bairstow played across the first ball of a new Mehedi spell and was lbw. Debutant Zafar Ansari could have gone for a duck, but was dropped off his fourth delivery faced, the ball deflecting past slip via Mushfiqur Rahims gloves. With Bangladeshs spinners exercising expert control, 65 minutes and 18.1 overs passed without a boundary until Root cashed in on a Taijul full toss to pick up four and move within a couple of his fifty, which came up with a clipped two through mid-wicket.His 122-ball vigil only came to an end when he played back to a Taijul delivery that slid on and trapped him lbw, making him the eighth man out after Ansari edged to second slip to become Mehedis fifth victim of the innings.dddddddddddd.At 144-8 Bangladesh had high hopes of earning a potentially decisive first-innings lead and might have done so had Mushfiqur not missed a stumping when Rashid had just six.The skipper, increasingly desperate for a breakthrough as England whittled down the arrears, rotated his bowlers with little effect and Rashid brought up the fifty stand with a driven four on the up off seamer Kamrul Imran, who bowled just three overs for 16 runs.Bangladesh appeared bereft of ideas leading up to the new ball - with the absence of Mehedi and Taijul from the attack at times baffling. Mehedi Hasan celebrates his second five-for in as many Tests Part-timer Sabbir Rahman did have Woakes caught at mid-wicket off a full toss on 38, but the all-rounder won a reprieve when the officials deemed the delivery a no-ball on the grounds of height. Replays suggested it was a harsh call. When the new ball was taken, the end of Englands innings came swiftly to a close - Woakes caught around the corner off Mehedi, before last man Steven Finn snicked Taijul behind to go for a second-ball duck.Englands first-innings cushion didnt last long as Tamim followed his first-innings hundred up with a dynamic 40 off 47 balls, using the reverse sweep to particularly telling effect against Ansari to manoeuvre the field. The spinner, given the chance to bowl ahead of Rashid, justified his captains faith as Tamim picked out Cook at leg-slip to hand Ansari his first Test scalp.Mominul, the only other batsman with a score of note in Bangladeshs first innings, fell to the first ball of the very next over as he edged Stokes to slip, where Cook held onto a comfortable chance. v Live Test Cricket Bangladesh vs England October 30, 2016, 3:45am Sky Sports 2 HD Get a Sky Sports Pass Upgrade to Sky Sports There was to be no collapse, though, as Imrul and Mahmudullah combined in a bullish third-wicket stand that threatened to put the match out of Englands reach. The pair looked well set to see out the day until Mahmudullah swept wildly at a full Ansari delivery and was bowled with stumps imminent.Watch extended highlights of todays play on Sky Sports 2 at 5.30pm, followed by The Verdict on the same channel at 6.30pm.
